The Methodist Medical Center in Dallas is one of the premier hospitals in north Texas. The campus features 515 private room beds, served by 282 physicians and features an award-winning cancer program, one of only 3 adult trauma emergency care centers in Dallas, a long-standing transplant center and many other top-tier services for its patients.

In the middle of the Texas summer, the hospital found it was having a hard time maintaining comfort cooling for the bed tower during the hottest parts of the year. Along with improving tenant comfort, the hospital also sought to reduce the energy consumption of their central plant. On top of that, the goal was to re-pipe the chiller plant to go from a variable primary plant to a variable primary flow plant.

HTS Texas worked with the mechanical contractor to be used as basis of bid for this energy retrofit project. HTS supplied a 2,000 ton Daikin dual compressor, centrifugal chiller based on its energy efficiency, capacity turndown and variable primary flow. Temporary cooling towers were provided during the install to prevent downtime, and the chiller was slid into the room through a large window in the side of the plant, making it a successful install for a retrofit project.

Methodist is already seeing results as tenant complaints have significantly reduced. With the chiller replacement alone, they are expected to see a savings of $230,000 in utility costs.
