The Durham District School Board put the wheels in motion toward constructing a two-story, 64,627 square foot building for 27 classrooms that will accommodate about 450 students from kindergarten to Grade 8. The school building costs were approximately $10 million and it was built with eco-features in mind. There are skylights in the gym, heat and solar thermal collector water heating system, recovery unit (provided by HTS) and outdoor classroom areas built with rock seating in semi-circles and trees to provide shade. The east-west orientation, optimizes use of natural lighting through windows and sun tunnels, along with the outdoor classrooms, and sand pits it not only make this a wonderful place to learn but an example and template for buildings which are designed with the environment in mind.
