Description

The National Arts Centre (NAC) required an efficient and cost-effective solution for coil replacement within its HVAC system. HTS supplied Heatcraft Coils, including Modu-Coils, a leading choice known for their innovative design and ease of installation. These Modu-Coils are assembled in two parts, allowing them to be transported and installed in tight or narrow spaces without the need for structural modifications. By eliminating the need for extensive demolition, this solution not only reduced installation costs but also minimized downtime, ensuring uninterrupted operation of the NAC’s facilities.

Beyond efficiency, Heatcraft Modu-Coils contribute to decarbonization by reducing construction waste and energy consumption associated with traditional coil replacement methods. Their extended lifespan further minimizes the need for frequent replacements, ultimately lowering the HVAC system’s overall carbon footprint.

This project was part of the Energy Services Acquisition Program (ESAP), a large-scale modernization effort led by Public Services and Procurement Canada to transition Ottawa’s district energy system to more sustainable technologies. By shifting from steam-based heating to a low-temperature hot water network, the ESAP initiative aims to position the system for carbon neutrality by 2030, targeting a 92% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 2005 levels. As a participant in this program, the National Arts Centre has already achieved a 33.7% reduction in annual greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to removing approximately 432 passenger vehicles from the road for one year. The new district energy system will enhance operational efficiency, phase out ozone-depleting refrigerants, and provide reliable heating and cooling for over 80 key government buildings, including Parliament Hill. Through this initiative, the NAC’s HVAC upgrades contribute to Canada’s commitment to sustainability, creating a more energy-efficient and environmentally responsible future.

HTS supplied the following equipment:

  • 100 + Heatcraft Coils and Modu-Coils
  • 16 Bell & Gossett Pumps
