The University Center at the University of Houston was originally built in 1967 and needed a few updates after years of aging. The University of Houston wanted the space to be more adaptative to suit the needs of the ever-changing student body. The renovations were done in multiple phases and were completed in early 2015. The improved multi-space center features additional student organization offices, student theater, ballroom, retail spaces, restaurants, study rooms, and comfortable 24-hour lounge areas.
UH added 120,000 square feet of new construction space to the University Center and would need an updated HVAC system to help improve building efficiency and occupancy comfort. To meet these goals, HTS worked with UH to incorporate a quiet and energy-efficient system that would ultimately save the university in long-term costs and provide year-round dehumidification control for the center.
The full scope of the customized system included Haakon air handling units with Haakon energy recovery units, AcoustiFLO fans, and Heat Pipe Technologies energy recovery heat pipes.
