Houston ISD’s prestigious Carnegie Vanguard High School relocated to a new building in South Houston to accommodate the increased enrollment. Since 2002, this premier learning facility for Houston’s gifted and talented students has won numerous awards including the U.S. News & World Report’s Top 100 Schools in America.
For this project, HTS Texas teamed up with local contractor, Kilgore Mechanical, and MEP consultants, Rice & Gardner, to design and install a HVAC system that provided a sustainable, energy efficient solution that also controlled humidity.
The main design included three 100% outdoor air Munters dedicated outdoor air units (DOAU) and a Daikin Variable Refrigerant Volume (VRV) system. The overall goal was to ensure proper outdoor air distribution, eliminate significant terminal reheat in the VAV systems, minimize the zone condensate, and provide maximum efficiency and comfort control. Combining the Munters and Daikin units allowed the team to size the VRV system for sensible loads since 85% of the latent load is handled in the DOAU and supply 48 dewpoint outdoor air directly to the classrooms.
In addition to the Munters and Daikin systems, HTS Texas also supplied electric duct heaters, a Daikin Applied Destiny air handling unit and condensing unit to complete the overall HVAC system.
HISD’s Carnegie Vanguard High School now has a technologically advanced HVAC system that will provide a comfortable learning environment and energy savings for years to come.
