Description

The YWCA had a bold vision for the new Crossroads Shelter, one building that would replace the two existing shelters. At 14,178 square feet, the new Crossroads shelter is twice the size of both previous buildings combined. It is wheelchair accessible and is designed to accommodate the needs of injured, disabled, and elderly women, as well as women with small children requiring cribs and strollers. A significant enhancement is additional space for private counselling as well as children’s programming and areas for group programs for both shelter residents and women in transition. This location was chosen in part because the adjacent property became available at an affordable price, and both lots were required to accommodate the new building. Capital costs were $3.5 million. This included all costs associated with demolition of the existing Crossroads II facility, new building construction, landscaping, security features and outfitting (furnishings).
Ken Trevelyan, the project architect, has considerable experience in sustainable building design. He included numerous features to increase energy efficiency in the building and reduce its environmental impact including High-efficiency heating and air conditioning from HTS.

HTS provided all the main HVAC equipment and Controls including:
• Burnley Electric Controls
• Daikin Heat Recovery Unit
• McQuay Heat Recovery Unit
• Xylem/B&G heat exchanger and pumps
• Sigma Indoor units
• Daikin Air Handling Unit
